Duties

The employee responds as a firefighter/paramedic to emergencies and initiates appropriate medical treatment including IV therapy, administration of various pharmaceuticals, advanced airway management, defibrillation and various basic life support skills.
Exercises control and direction over fire personnel in the application of emergency medical procedures and treatment protocols.
Maintains radio communications with designated base hospitals and carries out orders.
Assures that emergency medical equipment, tools, and apparatus are maintained, inspected and kept in good working condition.
Controls medical supplies, particularly narcotics, through utilization of inventory procedures, daily monitoring of shelf life of medical supplies.
Instructs others in EMT-D skills including CPR.
Serves as a fully trained member of the firefighting crew and performs wildland / structural firefighting, hazardous materials medical response and rescue operations.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Drug Testing: In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants for this position are required to submit to a drug test and to receive a negative drug result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug-testing designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Wearing of departmental uniform is required.
Position is subject to 24 hour shift rotations, night and/or weekend work.
Initial tour will be 40-hour work week for one full pay period (2 weeks) and then regular hours of duty of 72 hours per week there after. |

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
CERTIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have certification in the State of California and/or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)’s as a Paramedic. Applicants must submit proof of certification.
Must have or be able to obtain Firefighter I Certification within one (1) year.
Must possess Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). (Must submit proof with application or you will not be considered.)
AGE RESTRICTIONS:
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). Therefore, the maximum entry age of 37 applies. Those meeting this requirement are:
Applicants who have not reached their 37th birthday; OR
Current or Former Federal employees who are over 37 AND who have enough prior covered creditable service in fire or law enforcement covered positions, that when subtracted from their chronological age, puts their maximum entry age below 37. This means that applicants who have passed the entry age limit but who have previously served or are currently serving in a fire or law enforcement covered position, may in some cases re-enter a primary firefighter position, if the person meets the applicable qualification requirements for the position and will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable firefighter service by the time he/she reaches the mandatory retirement age of 57 years. “Covered positions” are those Federal positions that meet the definition of firefighter in 5 USC 8336(c) and 5 USC 8412(d) as determined by the Office of Personnel Management or the designated agency official.
Applicants over the maximum entry age should provide copies of all SF-50’s documenting total prior service in special retirement positions to support their claims: this includes all SF-50’s documenting entry into, AND departure from all covered firefighter/law enforcement positions. OR

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS, applicants must have at least one year of full-time specialized experience or the equivalent, comparable to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal Service by the date of application, which demonstrates the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of this position. Such experience includes (1) controlling or extinguishing wildland or structural fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) responding as a firefighter/paramedic to emergency medical calls for services or rescue operations; (3) detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; (4) operating fire or emergency communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and (6) developing or providing training in fire protection and prevention, or basic life support skills.
CLEARANCES:
Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must be determined to be physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. In addition, the employee will be required to successfully meet all medical requirements as specified under NPS RM-57 or NFPA 1582.
A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
VETERANS PREFERENCE: Five points may be added to the eligible ratings of veterans who: Entered the military service prior to October 14, 1976; served on active duty during the Gulf War between August 2, 1990 and January 2, 1992, regardless of where the person served; served on active duty for more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning September 11, 2001, and ending on the date prescribed by Presidential proclamation or by law as the last day of Operation Iraqi Freedom; or, served in a military action for which they received a campaign badge or expeditionary medal.
